How did you get here? What’s your story?
I’ve been in affiliate marketing since 1998 and have owned a variety of affiliate websites. For those who don’t know, affiliate marketing is a marketing arrangement by which an online retailer pays commission to an external website for traffic or sales generated from its referrals.
One of the new projects I am working on is to sell liquidated goods on Amazon and Walmart. It is a very niche space, a lot of sellers want to get into Walmart. We are working on a scanning app and testing various price points. For example, people didn’t want the goods at $5 but they flew off the shelf at $10. Another new project I’m working on is a blog called Saving K, the K stands for Kim. The target audience is higher income individuals who are looking for investment opportunities. In addition to those two projects, I am working on a social sharing tool for Pinterest called Zingball. Basically it encourages people to pin what they want to have pinned and when others then pin it they get free credits.
What motivated you to start the company and what motivates you now?
There aren’t any other free tools out there that offer bloggers rewards for pinning each other’s images. The tool is completely free now but at some point I’ll test a freemium model. I’ve built up the traffic needed to get it off the ground. We are focused on getting additional traction and helping people see the value.
How does your typical day start?
I always start with my email, check my Amazon stats then I check Facebook. In terms of family, my children are adults but two of them have special needs so I support them as needed.
What keeps you up at night?
My brain does not shut off. I have a notepad beside my bed because if I think of something, if I don’t get up and do it, I have to write it down. Otherwise I won’t go to sleep because I’m afraid I’m going to forget.
How did you learn to embrace risk-taking?
The more money I have in the bank, the riskier I get. When you’re successful, it’s much easier to take risks and to gamble. I also believe you have to have faith. I am a big law of attraction person. A few years ago James Martell spoke about how he makes the background of his computer links to all the websites he uses and lists his goals across the top. I loved this idea so I created a website that allows you to create something similar. You can add photos and your goals and make it your homepage. We are considering allowing companies to white label it for internal use.
If you had to pick – a night out or a night in?
That’s a hard question. I used to consider myself an extrovert and I would have said a night out. However the older I get, the more introverted I get. I think it is because I have a social job so sometimes the only downtime you really get is a night in.
What is one thing people don’t know/is a misconception of being a founder
I think some people think you sit in bed all day, you don’t really need to do anything and it is easy. When my children were little I was always being asked to drive other children to field trips because the parents thought I was home all day doing nothing. I also think people think you just get rich quick as a founder. It sounds easy but it isn’t.
Do you prefer coffee or tea?
I don’t do coffee or tea. I prefer Diet Coke. Although when I had COVID my taste was impacted and although I am still drinking Diet Coke I don’t think it tastes as good anymore.
