Q. How important is social media for a startup? Do we really need to be active on every platform?

A. Absolutely not. One of the fastest ways for a startup to waste time and money is trying to be everywhere at once.

Social media should support your business goals and not become a full-time distraction.

The reality is that most startups do not need a massive audience. They need the right audience. A B2B startup closing enterprise deals has very different social media needs than a consumer brand launching a lifestyle product.

We typically advise startups to focus on three things first:

  • Visibility
  • Credibility
  • Consistency

When investors, customers, partners, or recruits search for your company, your social presence helps validate that your business is active, legitimate, and growing. But founders often overestimate how much content they need and underestimate how strategic that content should be.

Instead of posting constantly, focus on:

  • Sharing industry expertise
  • Demonstrating momentum
  • Highlighting customer wins
  • Showing the people behind the company
  • Explaining the problem your startup solves

For many startups, LinkedIn alone can outperform five other platforms combined. For others, short-form video or founder-led content may drive the most engagement. The key is identifying where your audience already pays attention and showing up there consistently.

Social media is rarely the entire growth engine for an early-stage startup. But it is often the layer that strengthens trust, shortens sales cycles, and reinforces every other marketing effort you’re making.

The goal isn’t to chase vanity metrics. The goal is to build awareness that compounds as your startup grows.
