Trust Your Gut
By Debbie Cline
Trust your gut. Go with your gut. Gut reaction. Gut instinct. For today’s leader and entrepreneur, taking advantage of their gut can be the edge they need when making difficult decisions. Decision making is a very complex mix of data, reason, emotion and gut. Without consciously knowing it, your body processes millions of data points each day. With the proliferation of data in today’s world your gut is even more important.
Two examples of where trusting your gut is important are in hiring and when working with investors. In a startup, every hire is critical. Hiring people that check the boxes are not enough. If a candidate meets the qualifications but you have a feeling in the pit of your stomach that something isn’t right – keep looking.
Investors, especially early-stage investors, tend to trust their gut. A recent Harvard Business Review article shares that investor propensity to invest is significantly higher when they trust their gut. Remember that your investor pitch and relationship are more than just data.
Lastly, just because you have a gut feeling doesn’t mean that you don’t need to do the work. Support the feelings with fact and use all data available as well as your gut to make the best decisions.
