Navigating Breast Cancer:
My Journey Part 4
By Victoria Collins
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Everyone’s experience with cancer is unique and that is why Buzzy Rocket co-founder, Victoria, decided to share her journey in a four part series.
One question I get asked a lot is how do you support someone diagnosed with breast cancer? I know it can be confusing finding the right balance. Below are my personal recommendations.
- Show Up Emotionally: Sometimes, all they need is a listening ear or a word of encouragement. Stand by them and let them know you’re there, no matter the highs or lows. Your unwavering presence is important.
- Tackle the Practical Stuff: Do they need groceries? Done. Doctor’s appointment? Offer a ride. Are their household chores piling up? Help. Step in and handle the everyday tasks so they can focus on healing.
- Get Informed: Understand the ins and outs of breast cancer treatments and the journey your friend is on. The more you know, the more effective and empathetic your support will be.
- Respect Their Choices: Every journey is unique. Respect their treatment decisions and how they choose to cope with their diagnosis. Your role is to support, not steer. Trust them to navigate their own path and be there as a strong ally.
- Participate in Fundraising and Awareness: Step up and take part in charity events, walks, and awareness campaigns. Your involvement raises both funds and spirits.
- Send a Little Love: Sometimes, it’s the small gestures that mean the most. Send them a card, flowers, or put together a care package. These gestures remind them they’re not alone in this fight.
- Listen: Give them space to vent, share their fears, and process their emotions. Listen actively and validate their feelings.
- Give Them Privacy: Support doesn’t mean overstepping boundaries. Respect their privacy and wishes – whether it’s about sharing their diagnosis or their treatment. Ask how you can best support them.
I hope these posts have been helpful. If you would like to continue the conversation, please feel free to email me at Victoria@buzzyrocket.com. Thank you for listening to my journey.
