Why You Should Define Your Target Market
  By Debbie Cline

Would you rather market to 500 people, only 3 of which have the problem that you solve for, or market to 50 that are in your sweet spot?

Your target market is a fundamental pillar of your startup strategy. If you don’t understand your target market, both what types of businesses have the problem you solve for and who in the organization owns the problem, your message will be too broad to resonate, you won’t be able to have a refined strategy and you’ll waste your resources trying to sell to people who don’t have the right need or can’t buy.

Customers in your target market should have:

  • A need for the product or service (it solves a problem for them, whether they’re aware of it or not)
  • A desire for the solution once they’re aware of it
  • The ability to buy it – both the budget and authority

Why Defining Your Target Market is Crucial

Focused Message

Crisply identifying your target market allows you to crisply focus your message with a powerful brand narrative and differentiate you from the competition. You want people to think, “WOW! You get me!” and really connect with your message. When you understand who your consumers are, their language, and what resonates with them, it becomes easier to connect with them on a deeper, more personal level. This connection fosters trust and brand loyalty, integral to the long-term success of your startup.

Streamlined Marketing Efforts

Understanding your target market allows you to design and implement marketing strategies that resonate with your potential customers. It provides valuable insights into what appeals to your audience, such as their needs, wants, pain points, behavior, and preferences. By capitalizing on this information, you can focus your efforts on channels and strategies that reach these specific people most effectively, increasing the effectiveness of your campaigns.

Resource Optimization

A highly defined target market allows you to focus your marketing dollars. Instead of broad pitches and campaigns that don’t resonate, you hit the prospect jackpot and bring in leads that have the need, desire and ability to buy. With startups in particular, every dollar spent needs to bring in substantial returns. By identifying your target market, you streamline your resources toward a group of individuals who are most likely to be interested in your product or service. This brings a higher ROI and ensures that your marketing efforts and resources are not wasted on an uninterested audience.

As a startup it can be tempting to cater to everyone, mistakenly believing that a wider audience will lead to greater success. In reality, the opposite is true. In the world of startups, specificity is strength. Be clear about who your customers are, meet them where they are, and provide them with value that’s tailor-made for them. That’s the surest path to startup success.
